How it works

Four steps, and only the first one involves you. The other three are why the alert arrives in under a minute instead of the next morning.

The sequence

  1. You give us a page

    Paste the URL of the Wikipedia article and the address alerts should reach. Nothing to install and no Wikipedia account required.

  2. We watch the change feed

    Wikipedia publishes every edit across every article as it happens. We watch that stream continuously and match it against the pages our customers have asked about.

  3. We read the difference

    When your page appears, we pull the revision and the one before it, and work out what actually changed: what was added, what was removed, and which section it happened in.

  4. You get the email

    Within 60 seconds of the edit being saved. It carries the change itself, who made it, and whether they were a registered editor or an anonymous address.

Why 60 seconds is possible

Because we are not checking. Most tools poll: they revisit a page every so often and compare it to the last copy they took. That means the delay is however long the gap between checks happens to be, and it is usually measured in tens of minutes.

Wikipedia publishes edits as a live stream instead, so there is nothing to check. The edit arrives, we recognise the page, we read the difference and we send it. Speed is a consequence of the design rather than something we tuned.

We publish what that actually measures out at on the delivery speed page, because a number nobody can check is just a claim.

A registered editor added a company infobox naming TC Productions as a film production company founded in 2008, with Tom Cruise as founder and owner, then replaced the empty successor field with a predecessor crediting Cruise/Wagner Productions.
